]]>Thanks to some generous anonymous donations facilitated by Geneva Global and a gift from Capital for Good 8,000 ToughStuff lights, solar panels, mobile phone connectors and radio connectors are now bringing these survivors light and life after daylight hours as well as phone connectivity.
Geneva Global identified local partners in Haiti who managed the distributions, the first of which took place at the Seventh Day Adventist University campus where ADRA (See Article) were caring for the 10,000 people living in temporary shelters.
ToughStuff’s International Sales Manager, Jonathan Bamber was there to witness the impact these simple kits had on the families who received them :
“Visiting on the first night before the distribution it was pretty dark, a few flecks of light came from candles, torches or kerosene .. but wow - what a difference ! on the evening after the distribution, light was everywhere ! We could spot our 4 LED lights everywhere and were invited into people’s shelters and tents. Light had provided hope and security and a sense of community even existed.”

Why ToughStuff during an emergency
ToughStuff products are essential for emergency distributions in a disaster. With public utilities destroyed and fuel supplies compromised, solar LED lights provide safe and clear lighting at night, in contrast to candles and kerosene lamps which pose a severe fire risk where victims are living under canvas or in high density temporary accommodation. Where victims are forced onto the streets candles are inappropriate. The security afforded by light is essential as victims cope with multiple vulnerabilities as well as providing a sense of normality.
ToughStuff radio connectors make it possible to run transistor radios on solar power, thus increasing access to information such as timing and location of food distributions, re-uniting relatives, public health messages, and increasing a sense of community when familiar networks are destroyed and dysfunctionaletc.
The importance of mobile phone communications cannot be overstated. When regular electricity supplies are destroyed those who have managed to save their phones, and where connectivity is restored, can only use them for survival if they can be charged. ToughStuff phone connectors can be used with the same panel that powers the LED lamp or transistor radio with many common mobile phone models.

Thank You for your interest in ToughStuff and all of the triple-bottom-line benefits we provide
]]>No we do not. We currently only sell ToughStuff Solar Panels and LED lamps through our Buy One : Fund One campaign and other fundraiser campaigns with our partners. Our other products (such as cell phone connectors) are distributed in developing countries but have no real added value in the West quite yet.
How do your partnerships with other organizations work?
Every partnership we make works differently. Generally, you purchase our solar panel and lamp, and in return, the partner organization gets either 1)monetary funding or 2) the partnership organization receives ToughStuff products for their respective causes. For example, by purchasing a ToughStuff solar panel and lamp combo for yourself through the FrontLine SMS campaign, FrontLine SMS will receive a solar panel and phone connector (which we do not sell in developed countries) to charge their life-saving phones. Click here for more information on Frontline SMS.
Do you sell different products in the US than in Africa and other developing countries?
No, yours are exactly the same as those being used by the world’s poorest people. We think this is great because it bridges the gap between us and those you are helping fund half a world away. While you are enjoying your ToughStuff LED lamp for camping, emergencies, and other necessities, you can imagine how life changing these products are to people who rely on them for their most basic lighting needs.
Long story short- our products are Tough. We sell the same products here as we do in Africa to prove that these products can withstand anything from scorching African climates to the most hectic urban environments.
How much does the Solar panel and LED lamp weight? What kind of power do they put out?
Solar Panel features:
-4.6 ounces
-5in x 9in
-1w, 5.6v, 174 mA current
-Amorphous, almost impossible to break
-Water resistant, unaffected by rain
LED Lamp features:
-4.3 ounces
-height: 3in x width (widest point): 4in
-high-power led lights (8mm, super bright)

Why don’t your products have a bunch of bells and whistles?
ToughStuff builds practical and useful products. Developing countries rely heavily on Kerosene and other harmful lighting sources for their daily needs. We build products that work, last, and provide excellent lighting for any situation. Not to mention, bells and whistles do not help children do their homework at night.
What other things can I use my ToughStuff lamp and panel for?
There are an innumerable amount of uses for ToughStuff products. They are perfect for emergency situations, recreational sports, and general lighting needs. Some resourceful people have shared their ideas:
“I adopted a little dog & I put the light on low over the stairs so he can see to go out.” -Diane E.
“The Solar Panel and LED Lamp was very useful at night for reading in the tent and just getting ready for a good nights sleep.” -Shelly
“The LED lamp was perfect for my weekend of sailing. I sailed around all day with the panel attached to my bow and let the lamp charge all day. At night- the perfect amount of light for anything I needed to do!” -Michael

“I received my ToughStuff panel and my LED unit in the mail today. It is such a great feeling to know that I am helping to fund a Solar Village Entrepreneur in Africa to create a sustainable livelihood and lift them out of poverty. I am sharing the ToughStuff website with all my friends. It is something that is inexpensive but so beneficial to better my fellow man, woman and family..”
- Dan F.
“We got back for a week of camping, hiking, and “jeeping” in the mountains. The Solar Panel and LED Lamp was very useful at night for reading in the tent and just getting ready for a good nights sleep. I would lean the Solar Panel against the tent plugged into the lamp under the rain-fly. It was ready to go that evening. And it take up so little space in the jeep! It was great!”
